Fried and delicious, this unbelievable simple, quick and amazing looking appetizer will keep your party going! Chef Josh Elkin shows how to make some awesome bite-sized bloomin’ onions you could eat like popcorn! Serve hot with dipping sauce and chili sauce. Yummy!
PS: Some readers give the tip that if you soak the onions for a few hours after slicing, in cold water or ice water, they will bloom bigger. Worth trying!

Bloomin’ onion bites at a glance
- What they are: a mini version of the steakhouse blooming onion, one small onion per bite
- Best for: parties and game days, served hot
- Recipe by: Chef Josh Elkin, for Foodbeast (2016)
You’ll need
Small onions (red, white or yellow all work, according to the recipe), flour with seasoning, oil for frying, and a tart dipping sauce made from mayo and ketchup. Foodbeast has the full recipe.
Why they stand out
A full-size blooming onion is a sharing dish, which means everyone’s fingers go into the same onion and the same sauce. Josh Elkin wrote that this was exactly why he made them: each guest gets their own bites, with no double dipping. They also make a great size for a party plate.
Good to know
- Peeling small onions: pearl and baby onions are fiddly to peel. A quick dip in boiling water, then cold water, loosens the skins so they slip off.
- Frying safely at home: use a deep, heavy pot, fill it no more than halfway with oil, and keep a lid close by. Never put water on an oil fire.
- Serve them straight away. Like all fried food, they are crispest in the first few minutes.
More fried party snacks
If you love the onion part, these crispy coated onion rings are the classic version. For more finger food from the fryer, try fried pickles ready in 15 minutes or bacon-wrapped mozzarella sticks. For a party snack that isn’t fried, there’s the crispy potato stack.
