Making a tuna sandwich is so simple, so why not upgrade your kitchen game? Instead of the ordinary tuna sandwich, learn how to make The Perfect Tuna Melt.
Perfect even for those obsessed with tuna melts, this fast, delicious and seriously YUM all-star recipe will literally melt your heart.
The Perfect Tuna Melt

A tuna melt is a fantastic option for lunch or a quick dinner: filling, cheap, and made mostly from things in the cupboard. Sarah’s version is a little fresher than the diner kind, with garlic and parsley in the tuna salad and mozzarella for the melt.
At a glance
- You’ll need: bread, butter, celery, extra virgin olive oil, garlic, mayonnaise, mozzarella, onion, parsley, salt and pepper, canned tuna
- Time: about 15 to 20 minutes
- Makes: enough for a couple of sandwiches
Tips for a better tuna melt
- Drain the tuna really well. Wet tuna makes soggy bread. Press it in a sieve with the back of a spoon.
- Butter the outside, not the inside. That is what gives you the golden, crisp crust.
- Cook it over medium-low heat. Too hot and the bread burns before the cheese melts. A lid on the pan for a minute helps the middle warm through.
- Sturdy bread wins. Sourdough or a thick country loaf holds the filling; thin sandwich bread goes limp.
- Swap the cheese if you like: cheddar, Swiss or provolone all melt well.
What to serve with it
A bowl of tomato soup is the classic pairing. Pickles, a simple green salad or a handful of crisps work too.
