Good to know

  • Keep the fillings small. A waffle maker presses everything flat, so thinly sliced or chopped toppings work far better than big chunks.
  • Don’t overfill. Too much cheese leaks out of the sides and sticks to the plates. A light hand gives a cleaner, crispier waffle.
  • Grease the iron even if it’s non-stick, because melted cheese is what usually glues a waffle in.
  • Topping swaps: cooked crumbled sausage, chopped ham, peppers, olives or a pinch of dried oregano all work. Just keep everything pre-cooked, because the waffle doesn’t cook long enough to cook raw meat.
  • For a party, cut each waffle into quarters and serve them with a bowl of warm pizza sauce in the middle.
