At a glance
- Serves: 8
- Time: about 1 hour 15 minutes
- You’ll need: black pepper, diced tomatoes, dried basil, dried oregano, garlic, green bell pepper, ground beef, onion, salt, tomato paste, tomato sauce
Good to know
- Brown the beef well. Letting the beef get properly browned, then draining off the extra fat, gives the sauce a deeper flavor.
- Let it simmer. A long, gentle simmer is what turns canned tomatoes into a rich sauce. Stir now and then so it doesn’t catch on the bottom.
- Make it yours. Mushrooms, Italian sausage instead of part of the beef, a pinch of red pepper flakes or a spoon of sugar to soften the acidity are all common changes.
- Freezing. Cool the sauce, then freeze it in portions. It keeps well for about 3 months; thaw it overnight in the fridge.
