Good to know
- It’s a simple version. There’s no soy sauce in the ingredient list, so if you like a takeout-style flavor, many cooks add a splash of soy sauce or a drizzle of sesame oil at the end.
- Make it a meal by stirring in cooked chicken, ham or shrimp, or some chopped green onions.
- No eggs? The rice is still good without them. Our egg substitutes guide explains which swaps work in which dishes.
- Which oil? Any neutral or olive oil is fine here. Our guide to the top 10 cooking oils explains the differences.
- Storing it: cool leftover rice quickly and keep it covered in the fridge. Eat it within a day or two, and reheat it until it’s steaming hot.
