What makes Delicious Martha’s version special
This is a true from-scratch candy bar. The nougat is made with honey and whipped egg white mixed with peanut butter, and it’s topped with a cooked honey toffee full of salted peanuts and a thin layer of chocolate. There’s no marshmallow creme and there are no store-bought caramels, which is why it tastes so close to the real thing.
You’ll need: butter, dark or milk chocolate, egg white, heavy cream, honey, peanut butter, salt, salted roasted peanuts, sugar, vanilla powder, water.
Time: under an hour, plus cooling · Good to know: it’s the most hands-on version on this page, and worth it if you enjoy candy-making.
How homemade Snickers bars work
Almost every homemade version is built the same way, in layers in a lined square pan:
- A chocolate base, usually chocolate melted with a little peanut butter, spread thin and chilled until set.
- A soft nougat layer. Easy versions stir it together from marshmallow creme and peanut butter. From-scratch versions whip egg whites with a hot sugar syrup.
- Caramel and peanuts. Melted caramels or homemade caramel, with plenty of roasted peanuts stirred through.
- A chocolate top, spread over and chilled again until firm.
- Cut with a warm knife into bars or squares, wiping the blade between cuts for clean layers.
The golden rule is to let each layer set before adding the next. The fridge is your friend.

1. Homemade Snickers Bars

Why it stands out: The classic four-layer pan version: chocolate and peanut butter, a quick stovetop marshmallow nougat with peanuts, melted caramels, then chocolate again. You don’t need an oven or a candy thermometer.
Good to know: It makes 30 bars, so it’s the one for parties and bake sales.
You’ll need: caramels, creamy peanut butter, evaporated milk, granulated sugar, marshmallow fluff, milk chocolate chips, roasted peanuts, unsalted butter, vanilla extract.
Serves: 30 bars · Time: about 4½ hours, mostly chilling

2. Homemade Snickers

Why it stands out: It uses a real whipped egg-white nougat and store-bought caramels to keep things simpler. Each bar is dipped in chocolate, so they look like the real thing instead of pan squares.
Good to know: Dipping takes patience, but these are the ones that look straight out of the wrapper.
You’ll need: caramels (or homemade caramel), chocolate candy coating, corn syrup, cream, egg white, milk chocolate chips, roasted peanuts, salt, sugar, water.

4. Vegan Snickers Bars (No-bake, GF)

Why it stands out: Blended peanuts and medjool dates make a chewy nougat, and a blender date and peanut butter caramel replaces the cooked sugar caramel. Each bar is then dipped in dairy-free chocolate, so they’re vegan, gluten-free and no-bake.
Good to know: Sweetened mostly with dates, if you’re cutting back on refined sugar.
You’ll need: coconut oil, crunchy peanut butter, medjool dates, non-dairy milk, roasted peanuts, salt, unsalted peanuts, vanilla extract, vegan chocolate.
Serves: 18 · Time: about 4½ hours, mostly freezing
